Essential Senegal: From Dakar to Saint-Louis Along the Coast and Sahel
Seven days traveling through Senegal from vibrant Dakar to colonial Saint-Louis, passing through Gorée Island, Pink Lake, and the Djoudj bird reserve.
Description
This itinerary travels through Senegal, the most stable and accessible country in West Africa. It begins in Dakar, the westernmost capital on the continent, where the African Renaissance Monument rises above the Atlantic and the bustle of Sandaga Market sets the city's pulse. The first excursion is to Gorée Island, a UNESCO World Heritage Site: a 20-minute ferry carries travelers to cobblestone alleys where the Maison des Esclaves recalls centuries of atrocious history with overwhelming dignity. The journey continues to Pink Lake (Retba), where algae tint the water fuchsia and workers harvest salt as they have for centuries. To the south, the Petite Côte offers golden-sand beaches in Saly and the fishing village of Joal-Fadiouth, built entirely on shells. The Saloum Delta, a biosphere reserve, is a labyrinth of mangroves where flamingos paint the horizon. The route culminates in Saint-Louis, the former colonial capital with Eiffel iron bridges and streets that breathe French decay. From there, Djoudj National Park — one of the world's largest bird reserves — offers a spectacle of pelicans and flamingos from November to April. Seven days that reveal a Senegal far richer than its modest size suggests.
