Family Tunisia: From Carthage to the Desert
Seven days combining Roman history, dune desert and Mediterranean beaches in Tunisia. Ideal for families with children.
Description
This family itinerary crosses Tunisia from north to south, combining measured doses of history, nature and beach. It begins in the capital, Tunis, where children will be fascinated by the blue-and-white labyrinth of Sidi Bou Said and the ruins of Carthage. The visit to the Bardo Museum, with the world's largest collection of Roman mosaics, is a living history lesson. The trip continues south: Kairouan, Islam's fourth holiest city with its Great Mosque, and then Chott el Djerid, an immense salt lake where the horizon trembles with mirages. The stop in Douz allows for a gentle camel ride along the edge of the Sahara. The surprise excursion is Matmata, with its troglodyte houses dug into the rock that served as Luke Skywalker's home in Star Wars. On the way back north, the stop at the Roman amphitheater of El Djem (the third largest in the world) is overwhelming. The trip ends with two days of beach at Yasmine Hammamet, where children splash in the Mediterranean while parents rest. A week that combines Romans, desert, Star Wars and the sea.
