Caribbean Belize: coral cayes and pine forest, unhurried
Eight days between the cayes of the Mesoamerican Reef and the tropical forest of Belize with gentle snorkeling, beach hammocks, and Belikin beers at sunset.
Description
Belize is the only Central American country with English as an official language and a Caribbean pace of life that invites you to disconnect. This 8-day itinerary alternates between the cayes of the Mesoamerican Reef—the second largest in the world—and the inland rainforest. In Caye Caulker there are no cars, only golf carts and bicycles; the philosophy is unhurried. You swim with nurse sharks in Hol Chan, snorkel with rays in Shark Ray Alley, and watch the sunset from the Split with an ice-cold Belikin. Inland, you explore the ATM caves of Actun Tunichil Muknal with Maya skeletons, relax in the blue waters of the San Ignacio River, and finish in Hopkins with Garifuna culture and drums on the beach. There is no rush or rigid agenda: each day adapts to the rhythm of the sea and your own tiredness.
Health & safety
- Bottled water throughout Belize except San Ignacio
- Dengue mosquitoes on the coast: repellent mandatory
- Occasional jellyfish in the cayes: ask locals before swimming
- ATM Cave has cold water and slippery rocks: proper footwear is critical
