Bolivia Extreme: From the La Paz Cable Car to the Wild Altiplano
Nine days of extreme high-altitude adventure: La Paz and its cable car network, the 4x4 expedition to the Salar de Uyuni, multicolored lagoons and altiplano geysers.
Description
Bolivia is the heart of the South American altiplano, and this extreme 9-day itinerary explores its most awe-inspiring landscapes, all above 3,600 meters of altitude. It begins in La Paz, the highest capital in the world, where the cable car network (Mi Teleférico) crosses the city among snow-capped mountains and offers a unique perspective of the Andean metropolis. The Valley of the Moon, on the outskirts, is a landscape of eroded rock formations that seem to belong to another planet. The expedition continues on to the Salar de Uyuni, the largest salt desert on the planet: 10,582 km² of absolute white where perspective is lost and photos play with infinite depth. The 4x4 journey traverses the southern altiplano: Laguna Colorada, tinged red by algae and pink flamingos; the Sol de Mañana geysers, which erupt at -4,800 m amid sulfurous vapors at dawn; and the Sud Lípez region, Bolivia's most remote corner, where the landscape looks like the surface of Mars. The altitude, the nighttime cold (-15 °C) and the rustic nature of the trip make this route an experience suited only to travelers with real stamina.
