UNESCO Heritage(2)

Kotor

Look out over the Bay of Kotor from the top of its Venetian walls, which zigzag up the mountain to St. John's Fortress. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979, the old town hides cobbled alleys, gray stone palaces, and the 12th-century St. Tryphon's Cathedral. Among facades bearing noble coats of arms and squares where cats bask in the sun, the port welcomes cruise ships beneath mountains that plunge almost vertically into the water. Climb early to beat the heat, then cross over to Perast, a few kilometers away, to see the bay from the other side.

Bay of Kotor

Admire the Bay of Kotor from the water, where steep cliffs drop into a sea so calm that many compare it to the Norwegian fjords. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979, this bay in northern Montenegro is home to walled towns like Kotor and Perast, with Venetian palaces and baroque churches facing the quay. Climb the steps of St. John's Fortress to see the curves of the fjord, or take a boat to the islet of Our Lady of the Rocks, built stone by stone by local sailors over centuries.

Sveti Stefan

Sveti Stefan, the castle-island where medieval stones rise from the Adriatic opposite the Montenegrin coast. Walk the fine sand of its central beach, snorkel in the crystal-clear water, or stroll along the shore gazing at the walls of the old fortified village, now turned into an exclusive resort. History, the sea, and medieval architecture share a single corner, and you can admire the island from the isthmus or swim alongside it as the sun sets over the Adriatic.

National Park(1)

Lovćen National Park

Wander the limestone slopes of Mount Lovćen in southern Montenegro, where karst rocks hide caves and sinkholes you can explore on foot. Follow the marked trails to viewpoints overlooking the valley and, with patience and binoculars, watch birds of prey soaring over the pine forests. The park, a national symbol that gave the country its name for its "black mountain," is also home to the mausoleum of Petar II Petrović-Njegoš atop Jezerski vrh, at 1,657 meters. Bring water and sturdy footwear: the terrain is uneven, and the best routes cross conservation areas with protected wildlife.
