Via Ferrata and Canyoning in the Albanian Alps

Six days of adventure in the Albanian Alps: via ferrata, the Theth-Valbona pass trek, and canyoning in Albania's wildest canyons.

6 days1 countryJune to September

Description

The Albanian Alps, also known as the southern Dinaric Alps, offer some of the most rugged and unexplored terrain in Europe. This itinerary places the traveler in Shkodër, the gateway to northern Albania, from where they venture into the Theth valley. Here, a recently installed via ferrata allows climbers to ascend 300-meter vertical walls above the valley, with extreme exposure and sections where a single mistake could be fatal. The Theth-Valbona pass trek, at 1890 meters of altitude, challenges hikers with unstable terrain and unpredictable weather. Canyoning in the tributary canyons of the Valbona adds rappelling, water jumps, and swimming in glacial waters. Each day involves real physical risk and demands mental determination, fully justifying this route's extreme classification.

Health & safety

  • Mandatory adventure insurance with mountain coverage above 2,500 m
  • Hypothermia risk in glacial meltwater: a wetsuit is essential
  • No phone coverage in the valleys: bring a satellite SOS device if possible
