The Charm and Gastronomy of Tuscany and Umbria

Ten days of total relaxation among Tuscan hills and medieval villages, with wine tastings, slow food and thermal spa treatments in the heart of Italy.

10 days1 countrySpring (May–June) and autumn (September–October) for grape harvest and mild weather

Description

This itinerary is designed exclusively to reduce stress and reconnect with life's simple pleasures: good food, excellent wine, serene landscapes and the unhurried pace of the Italian countryside. It begins in Florence, but without the hassle of queues: the visit to the Uffizi Gallery is done with pre-booked entry and no rush, taking time over the works that really matter. Sunset from Piazzale Michelangelo is a relaxing ritual with panoramic views of the city while street musicians play. Artisanal gelato tastings become a daily ritual. From Florence, the journey heads into the Chianti wine region, where back roads wind through vineyards and olive groves. Visits to family-run wineries include tastings in rooms overlooking the hills, paired with pecorino cheese and local cured meats. Lunch at a local farm, prepared with ingredients from the garden, is a mindful slow-living experience. Siena appears with its Piazza del Campo, one of the most beautiful medieval squares in Europe, where sitting on the ground with a coffee is the main activity. Those who wish may climb the Torre del Mangia, but it is not mandatory. San Gimignano, with its medieval towers and its world-champion gelato shop, invites aimless strolling. Montepulciano offers the experience of the Bagno Vignoni thermal baths, where thermal water flows directly into the main square, an oasis of peace. The trip culminates in Perugia, capital of Umbria, with its Etruscan old town and the Perugina chocolate factory, where a sensory tasting of artisanal chocolate takes place. Each day includes free time for a siesta, reading or simply taking in the scenery.

Health & safety

  • The thermal water at Bagno Vignoni must not be drunk
  • Tuscan roads are winding: take care if you get carsick
  • Wine at tastings is sampled in small amounts: drink in moderation
  • Summer heat can be intense on the shadeless hills
