Tropical Brazil Relax: From Salvador to the Islands of Bahia
Seven days of total disconnection on the Bahian coast: colonial Salvador, car-free Morro de São Paulo, the wild island of Boipeba, and the Tinharé archipelago.
Description
The coast of Bahia holds some of Brazil's last beach paradises, where time is measured by the tides. This 7-day itinerary begins in Salvador, Bahia, with a stay at a resort overlooking the Bay of All Saints and the colonial Pelourinho as the first cultural stop. From there, a speedboat takes you to Morro de São Paulo, a car-free island village in the Tinharé archipelago. The beaches—divided into four numbered stretches—range from a lively scene (Segunda Praia) to near-total solitude (Quarta Praia). The journey continues by speedboat to Boipeba, the wildest island of the archipelago: pristine beaches with natural pools at low tide, pousadas hidden among coconut palms, and the feeling of having reached Brazil before mass tourism. Sunsets from the pousadas with a tropical-fruit caipirinha become the daily ritual. The Tinharé archipelago is the backdrop: emerald-green waters, coral reefs for snorkeling, and walks along beaches where no one else is around but you and the seagulls. The pace is hammock, book, sea, and silence.
Health & safety
- Biodegradable sunscreen mandatory to protect the reefs
- Bottled water on the islands: do not drink tap water
- Mosquito repellent is essential at dusk in the mangroves
