Tokyo by day is orderly and quiet. Tokyo by night is an explosion of neon, hidden alleys, bars for six people and basements playing techno until the sun comes up. This 5-day itinerary dissects the megalopolis's nightlife quarter by quarter. It starts in Shinjuku: dinner at an Omoide Yokocho alley izakaya, then karaoke in Kabukicho (Asia's largest red-light district) and getting lost in Golden Gai — a maze of 200 micro-bars seating 4 to 5 people. The second night heads into Shibuya: crossing the world's most famous zebra crossing at night, vintage record shops, hard-to-find sake bars and techno clubs in converted warehouses. The third night is Roppongi, the quarter of megaclubs with international DJs and parties until 9 a.m. The fourth is Shimokitazawa — Tokyo's Brooklyn: curry bars, craft beers and live concerts. And the last night: a sushi breakfast at Toyosu Market at 5 a.m., as the auctioneers finish their shift.
