South Africa After Dark: Cape Town Nightlife, Wines and Maboneng

South Africa's most vibrant route: the bars and clubs of Long Street and Bree Street in Cape Town, vineyard parties in Stellenbosch, the rooftops and street art of Johannesburg's Maboneng Precinct, and the legendary night out on Vilakazi Street in Soweto.

8 days1 countryFrom November to March to make the most of the long days and warm summer nights. Cape Town is in full swing in December-January.

Description

South Africa is, without a doubt, Africa's most vibrant country. With Cape Town's bar scene, Stellenbosch's vineyard parties and the cultural and nightlife revolution of the Maboneng Precinct in Johannesburg, this 8-day itinerary tours the epicenters of South African fun. Cape Town is a party in itself. Long Street, the main artery of the night, is an endless string of bars with live music, clubs and restaurants where the party starts early and never ends. Bree Street is the hipster version, with craft cocktail bars and breweries. Camps Bay offers the glamour of beachfront terraces. And by day, going up Table Mountain or visiting the beaches of Clifton and Camps Bay recharges your batteries for another night. Stellenbosch, the university wine town, is the perfect complement: wineries that turn into meeting points with music at night, candlelit wine tastings and a young, cosmopolitan atmosphere. It's impossible to get bored in its oak-lined streets and colonial architecture. Johannesburg, the city of gold, is pure energy. The Maboneng Precinct is the coolest neighborhood on the continent: street art on every corner, design markets, galleries, rooftop bars and clubs that don't close until dawn. Soweto, the legendary township, offers a unique night: dinner at a traditional restaurant, dancing to kwaito and South African house on Vilakazi Street, the street of Mandela and Tutu.

Health & safety

  • Johannesburg and Cape Town are malaria-free
  • Drink in moderation: Joburg's altitude (5,600 ft) makes alcohol hit faster
  • Tap water is drinkable throughout the country
  • Sun protection for beach days at Clifton
  • Travel insurance with medical coverage recommended
