Seychelles: Indian Ocean Paradise of Pink Granite and Dream Beaches

Seven days in one of the planet's most beautiful archipelagos, where the emblematic pink granite boulders sink into turquoise waters. Mahé, Praslin and La Digue offer postcard beaches, UNESCO-listed rainforests and the legendary coco de mer.

Description

Seychelles is the very definition of a tropical paradise. Located in the Indian Ocean, off the African coast, these 115 granitic and coral islands offer some of the planet's most photogenic scenery. This itinerary is designed for total relaxation, combining the three main islands in a week of absolute disconnection. The journey begins on Mahé, the largest island and home of the capital Victoria, one of the smallest capitals in the world. The Sir Selwyn Selwyn-Clarke market is a feast of colors, aromas and flavors: tropical fruits, fresh Indian Ocean fish and Creole spices. Beau Vallon beach, the island's most popular, invites long sunset walks. A short ferry takes you to Praslin, home of the Vallée de Mai, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This prehistoric rainforest of coco de mer palms — the largest seed in the world, with its unmistakably erotic shape — was described by General Gordon as the original Garden of Eden. Walking among these giant palms is an almost mystical experience. La Digue is Seychelles' jewel: an island where time has stood still, with barely any cars, where the transport of choice is the bicycle. Here lies Anse Source d'Argent, probably the most photographed beach in the world: pink granite boulders polished by millennia of waves, white sand and water of an unreal turquoise. Pedaling along paths lined with vanilla and cinnamon, stopping at lonely coves and enjoying a fresh coconut under a palm tree is the most authentic luxury there is.

Health & safety

  • Seychelles is one of the few African countries without malaria: no prophylaxis required
  • Mandatory: yellow fever certificate if arriving from an endemic country
  • Drink bottled water as a precaution
  • Biodegradable sunscreen to avoid harming the coral reefs
  • Travel insurance with medical coverage recommended (private healthcare is very expensive)
