Scottish Highlands and Castles: from Edinburgh to Skye

A twelve-day journey through the Scottish Highlands: medieval castles, deep lochs, wild moors and the legend of the Loch Ness Monster.

12 days1 countryFrom May to September

Description

This itinerary starts in Edinburgh, the Scottish capital built on two hills with a castle dominating the horizon. The traveler explores the medieval old town and the Georgian new town before heading north. Loch Lomond marks the entrance to the Highlands, where moors stretch to the horizon. Loch Ness, the largest body of freshwater in Great Britain, hides its legendary creature while the castles of Urquhart and Dochfour guard its shores. The west coast shows the glacial fjords known as sea lochs, with fishing villages that seem to belong to another age. The Isle of Skye, reachable over a modern bridge, concentrates Scotland's most dramatic mountains: the black basalt Cuillins, the Quiraing cliffs and the Talisker falls. The trip returns through Glencoe, the scene of one of the saddest massacres in Scottish history, and Stirling, where William Wallace defeated the English. Twelve days of history, legend and raw nature that define the soul of Scotland.

Health & safety

  • The sun is treacherous on Skye: it can burn even on cloudy days
  • Beware of narrow roads without shoulder: give way to whoever climbs
  • Midges bite: repellent with DEET is essential in summer
