Kansai Zen: Gardens, Temples and Silence in the Heart of Japan
Eight days of serenity in Kansai: Kyoto's dry gardens, zen meditation on Koyasan, the bamboo grove of Arashiyama and Nara's sacred deer.
Description
The Kansai region concentrates Japan's most contemplative essence. This itinerary is designed for travelers seeking disconnection and serene beauty, avoiding the crowds with dawn visits and temple lodging. It starts in Kyoto with the zen gardens of Ryoanji and Daitokuji, where the raked gravel invites silent meditation. An early excursion to the Arashiyama bamboo grove — before the multitudes — and the golden temple Kinkakuji. The night on Mount Koyasan, in a shukubo (temple lodging), includes the goma fire ceremony at dawn and walks through Japan's largest cemetery, Okunoin, lit by stone lanterns. In Nara, the sacred deer of the park and the Great Buddha of Todaiji temple offer an almost supernatural calm. The trip closes with a tea ceremony in Uji and a riverside stroll. No rush, no overloaded itineraries: every day holds two activities at most, leaving space simply to be.
Health & safety
- Futons at temples are thin: anyone with back issues should consider a ryokan with a bed
- Many temples have no heating in winter
