Hidden Oman: from the Forts of Nizwa to the Sands of Wahiba
Nine days discovering Oman's hidden treasures: Muscat's souks, Nizwa's fort, Arabia's Grand Canyon, the dunes of Wahiba Sands and the dhows of Sur.
Description
Oman is the Middle East's best-kept secret — a country of staggering scenery and legendary hospitality. This 9-day itinerary explores the Sultanate from north to south, starting in Muscat with the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque and the maze of the Muttrah souk, where frankincense perfumes the alleys. The route heads into the mountainous interior to Nizwa, former capital with its imposing 17th-century fort and the picturesque Friday goat market. From there you ascend to Jebel Shams — Arabia's Grand Canyon, with precipices dropping over 1,000 meters. The orange dunes of Wahiba Sands offer a night in a Bedouin camp. On the coast, Sur reveals its traditional dhow shipyard — the legendary Omani timber vessels — while Wadi Shab surprises with turquoise pools between its canyons. Lodging in boutique hotels and luxury desert camps. Transport by 4x4 with an English-speaking local guide.
Health & safety
- Drink plenty of water: heat in the wadis can cause dehydration
- Carry mosquito repellent for areas with water
- Avoid swimming in pools without asking locals about hidden currents
