Greek Islands with the Family: Seven Days in Crete

A week in Crete with accessible visits to the Palace of Knossos, boat trips to Spinalonga, and fine sandy beaches ideal for all ages.

7 days1 countrySummer (June-August) for beach time and sailing in optimal conditions

Description

Crete, Greece's largest island, offers the perfect balance between ancient culture and beach vacations for families. This itinerary is designed so that five generations can enjoy themselves together without age or mobility barriers. It begins in Heraklion, the Cretan capital, where the Palace of Knossos, the jewel of Minoan civilization, offers an easy tour with flat paths and partial shade. Cretaquarium, one of the largest aquariums in Europe, fascinates children and adults alike with its tanks of Mediterranean species. The Natural History Museum lets children touch fossils and learn about earthquakes in an interactive room. From Heraklion, the family travels on to Elounda, a coastal village with crystal-clear waters and sandy beaches. The boat trip to the island of Spinalonga, the former leper colony, is a fascinating excursion that combines history and sailing. The boats are stable and accessible. Elounda's beaches have shallow, sheltered waters, perfect for children learning to swim. In Rethymno, the Venetian old town with its pedestrian streets makes it easy to stroll with a stroller among fountains and tree-lined squares. The Fortezza, the Venetian fortress, has accessible ramps and panoramic views. Rethymno beach, with its long stretch of golden sand, is ideal for large families. Chania, the westernmost city, offers a Venetian harbor with family-friendly restaurants. The boat trip to the Balos Lagoon, with its turquoise waters and white sandy bottom, is the crowning touch: the lagoon is so shallow that children can wade dozens of meters through the water in complete safety.
