Extreme New Zealand: bungee, glaciers and volcano
Twelve days of pure adrenaline in New Zealand — bungee jumping in Queenstown, heli-hike on the Franz Josef Glacier, sea kayaking in Abel Tasman and the Tongariro Alpine Crossing — with the South Island as the playground.
Description
This itinerary is for those seeking the limit of adrenaline in New Zealand. It begins in Queenstown, the world's adventure capital, where AJ Hackett invented the commercial bungee jump in 1988. The Kawarau Bridge, 141 ft above the turquoise river, remains the most iconic jump. Added to it are jetboating at 53 mph through the canyons of the Shotover River/Canon del Shotover, skydiving from 15,000 ft over The Remarkables and paragliding off Bob's Peak. In Wanaka, the ascent of Roys Peak rewards you with one of the most photographed views on the planet. The heli-hike on the Franz Josef Glacier — a 7-mile river of ice descending from the Southern Alps to just 1,000 ft above sea level — is an experience that only happens in New Zealand. Abel Tasman offers sea kayaking among granite islets and golden-sand beaches, and the Tongariro Alpine Crossing closes the itinerary with its 12-mile volcanic crossing.
Health & safety
- New Zealand has no venomous land animals
- The main risks are: hypothermia in the mountains (weather changing in minutes), injuries from falls during extreme activities and giardiasis from drinking untreated river water in farming areas
- Rafting and bungee require declaration of heart and back conditions
- The ferry crossing between islands can cause severe seasickness with a cross swell
