Climbing and Multi-Adventure in Siurana and Paklenica
Eight days of world-class limestone climbing from the walls of Siurana in Tarragona to the Paklenica canyon in Croatia, with real fall risk.
Description
This itinerary connects two of the Mediterranean's most important sport climbing destinations for an experience of genuine controlled danger. It begins in Siurana, a stone village perched atop a cliff in the province of Tarragona, regarded by many climbers as the capital of European limestone climbing. The vertical walls and overhangs offer routes of every grade, from 6a to 9b+, with holds combining microscopic crimps and generous pockets. Siurana's limestone, polished by decades of climbing, is technical and unforgiving. Falls at Siurana are long and onto uneven ground. Bolting with expansion anchors requires confidence in the gear placed. The second leg of the trip takes the climber to Paklenica National Park in Croatia, where the main canyon offers walls of up to 400 meters of limestone. The classic Anica Kuk route, with 350 meters of climbing over 12 pitches, is a serious commitment in terms of height and exposure. Rock quality varies, and rockfall is a constant hazard in some sections. Paklenica's karst terrain, with its sparse vegetation and isolation, demands complete self-sufficiency. Sudden mountain storms can turn the dry gorges into dangerous rivers. This trip is not for beginners or for those seeking recreational adrenaline: the consequences of a mistake are serious, and rescue in Paklenica can take hours.
Health & safety
- Falls while sport climbing on limestone can cause serious injuries even with correct belaying
- Summer heat in Siurana can exceed 38 degrees in the shade
- Sudden storms in Paklenica can strand climbers on the wall
- Dehydration on long climbing days is a constant risk
