Classic Route through Mainland Greece: from Athens to Thessaloniki

A twelve-day journey through the treasures of classical and Byzantine Greece, from the Acropolis of Athens to the hanging monasteries of Meteora and vibrant Thessaloniki.

12 days1 countrySpring (March-June) and autumn (September-October) for mild weather and fewer crowds

Description

This itinerary begins in Athens, the cradle of Western civilization, where the traveler explores the Acropolis and the Parthenon at dawn to avoid the crowds. The Acropolis Museum houses the original marbles and offers a unique perspective on ancient Athens. The Plaka neighborhood, with its cobblestone alleys and traditional tavernas, invites you to wander among neoclassical houses and small tree-lined squares. The Ancient Agora, the political and commercial center of the polis, reveals the origins of democracy. From Athens, the journey heads to Delphi, considered the navel of the world by the ancient Greeks. The Sanctuary of Apollo, where the Pythia delivered her oracles, sits on the slopes of Mount Parnassus overlooking the Pleistos Valley. The Archaeological Museum of Delphi houses the Charioteer, one of the best-preserved bronze statues of antiquity. The next stop is Meteora, where six Orthodox monasteries rise atop rock pillars up to 400 meters high. The Great Meteoron Monastery, the largest and oldest, offers an imposing view of the Thessaly valley. Hiking trails between the monasteries allow visitors to appreciate the area's unique geology. The trip culminates in Thessaloniki, Greece's second city and a crossroads of cultures. The White Tower dominates the waterfront, while the Rotunda and the Arch of Galerius bear witness to the city's Roman and Byzantine past. The Byzantine walls wind up the hill of the upper town, offering panoramic views of the Thermaic Gulf. A food tour through the Modiano Market rounds out the immersion in contemporary Greek culture. The Halkidiki peninsula, with its crystal-clear waters and Mount Athos, provides the perfect finale to this journey through the most authentic Greece.

Health & safety

  • Summer heat can be intense, especially at archaeological sites without shade
  • The stairs of the Meteora monasteries are steep and have no railing in some sections
  • Tap water in Athens is not recommended for drinking
  • Mosquito bites are frequent in humid areas at dusk
