Benin and Togo Fun: Voodoo, Beaches, and Nightlife in the Gulf of Guinea
Eight days of partying and mysticism between Benin and Togo: beach clubs in Cotonou, authentic voodoo rituals in Ouidah and Togoville, vibrant markets in Lomé, and the best nightlife in the Gulf of Guinea.
Description
This itinerary brings together two of the most vibrant and least explored countries in the Gulf of Guinea on a route designed for travelers seeking parties, culture, and experiences that no resort can offer. It begins in Cotonou, Benin's liveliest city, where the beach clubs of Route des Pêches offer zouk and coupé-décalé music with your feet in the sand and pineapple mojitos. By day, a pirogue excursion to Ganvié — the African Venice — reveals a floating market that seems unreal. The most intense experience is the voodoo fetish market in Dantokpa and the visit to Ouidah, world capital of Vodun: attending a ceremony with sacred drums and possession dances is something no other trip can offer. The route crosses into Togo, where Lomé surprises with its Grand Marché ruled by the Nana Benz — legendary traders — and a beach bar scene that competes with Cotonou's. The trip culminates in Togoville, on the shores of Lake Togo, where the most authentic voodoo shrines hold rituals that connect with the ancestors. Nights invariably end in Lomé, among Eku beers, Togolese music, and the murmur of the Atlantic. Eight days of spirituality, partying, and discovery in two countries that very few travelers dare to explore.
Health & safety
- Yellow fever vaccination is mandatory in both countries
- Malaria prophylaxis is essential for the entire route
- Drink only bottled water: at beach clubs, always ask whether the ice is made from treated water
