From the Alps to the Amalfi Coast: Italy by Train

A fourteen-day tour of Italy's great cities by high-speed train, from Milan and Venice to Rome and Naples, with stops in Florence and Verona.

14 days1 countrySpring (April-June) and autumn (September-October) for mild weather and fewer crowds

Description

This itinerary connects the gems of northern and southern Italy via the high-speed rail network, offering full immersion in Italian art, history, and gastronomy. The journey begins in Milan, the capital of fashion and design, where the Gothic Duomo dominates the Piazza del Duomo. Leonardo da Vinci's Last Supper at Santa Maria delle Grazie is one of the most coveted masterpieces in the world. The Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, with its mosaics and historic cafés, connects the square to the Teatro alla Scala. The Brera district, with its cobbled streets and art galleries, offers a bohemian respite. From Milan, a short ride leads to Verona, the city of Romeo and Juliet. The Arena di Verona, a 1st-century Roman amphitheater, still hosts open-air operas. The Piazza delle Erbe, with its market and Renaissance frescoes, is the city's beating heart. Venice appears like nowhere else: a labyrinth of canals, bridges, and palaces floating on the lagoon. St. Mark's Square, the Doge's Palace, and the Rialto Bridge are unmissable landmarks. A gondola ride through the smaller canals reveals Venice at its most intimate. Florence, cradle of the Renaissance, unfolds its splendor in Brunelleschi's Dome, the Accademia Gallery with Michelangelo's David, and the Uffizi Gallery with Botticelli's Birth of Venus. The Ponte Vecchio, with its jewelry shops, spans the Arno. Rome, the Eternal City, requires several days: the Colosseum, the Roman Forum, the Trevi Fountain, the Pantheon, and Vatican City with the Sistine Chapel. Naples, the final stop, offers the vibrant energy of Spaccanapoli, the National Archaeological Museum with its treasures from Pompeii, and an excursion to the ruins of Pompeii itself.
