What to see in Uganda: 10 must-sees
Discover what to see in Uganda: 10 must-see destinations, from Bwindi Impenetrable Forest to Queen Elizabeth National Park. Predominantly national park and city; each entry includes the best time to visit and the link to its official source.
National Park(3)
Drive the dirt tracks of Queen Elizabeth, near Kasese, and cross the savanna where elephants, lions, hippos, and chimpanzees share the land. Join a guided sunrise safari, cruise Lake George among waterbirds, and climb to the viewpoints to watch the wildlife stir at sunset. Follow the trails on foot for birdwatching and discover why this park is one of the most wildlife-rich corners of Uganda.
Watch the Nile squeeze between rocks just 7 meters apart before plunging into the gorge of Murchison Falls, near Masindi. Cruise the river at dusk as hippos surface beside the bank and elephants come down to drink. Book a guided sunrise safari to roam the open savanna in the north of the park. Walk the trails of Budongo Forest and note the bird species you identify, including the shoebill. Uganda concentrates here a wealth of wildlife that demands constant conservation efforts.
Travel from Fort Portal to Semliki and venture into the rainforest that continues from the Congo Basin. Walk the trails among giant trees, watch chimpanzees and colobus monkeys, and bathe in the Sempaya hot springs, which bubble at over 90 degrees. Camp by the river among rare birds such as the picathartes and the black-casqued hornbill, and cross grasslands where buffalo and forest elephants graze.
City(2)
Explore Kampala by climbing the minaret of the Gaddafi Mosque, from where you can see the capital's seven hills, then head down to Owino Market, where stalls of fabric, fruit, and crafts fill entire alleys. Set aside time for the Uganda Museum, with its musical instruments and ethnographic exhibits, and for the Cultural Center, with live dance and music. Among matatus, cafés, and commercial districts, the city blends colonial buildings, open-air markets, and the daily routine of millions of Ugandans.
Stroll along the shores of Lake Victoria in Entebbe, Uganda's former capital, where the Botanical Garden is home to century-old trees and shorebirds. Visit the city zoo, watch fishermen come ashore with their catch in the morning, and tour the Uganda Museum to understand the country's history. In the local markets you'll find tropical fruits, dried fish, and handmade crafts. The mix of colonial architecture, tree-lined streets, and everyday life by the water defines the calm character of this lakeside city, the country's point of entry through its international airport.
Natural(2)
Sail across Africa's largest lake, 68,800 km² of waters where hippos, crocodiles, and waterbirds move among reeds and papyrus. Take a boat from Jinja to reach the spot where the Nile leaves the lake, or camp on fishermen's shores, where tilapia and Nile perch are hauled in at dawn. The rock formations of the area hold millions of years of geological history, and their trails let you follow the shore as you watch cormorants and kingfishers.
Discover Ngamba Island, an hour by boat from Entebbe on Lake Victoria, where 49 orphaned and rescued chimpanzees live in semi-freedom in a forest sanctuary. Approach the viewing platform and watch the keepers feed them at set times, while project guides explain the rescue, rehabilitation, and community education work that sustains this initiative. Walk the trails among fruit trees, spot lake birds, and take half-day or full-day boat trips. Entrance fees directly fund the animals' permanent care.
UNESCO Heritage(1)
Immerse yourself in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, near Kabale, where mountain gorillas inhabit 330 km² of woodland. Walk through the mist and thick vegetation until you come face to face with a family of gorillas, infants included, just meters away. The park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, shelters nearly half of the mountain gorillas left on the planet. After the trek, you'll understand why they called Uganda the 'Pearl of Africa'.
Natural Heritage(1)
Explore Mount Rwenzori, the Mountains of the Moon in Kasese, and climb to Uganda's rooftop at 5,109 meters. Cross bamboo forests, moorlands with giant lobelias, and glaciers that hold on beside the equator. Take on the 7-day trekking circuit, sleep in mountain huts, and wake beside high-altitude lakes. From the summit, gaze over the valley and the ridges that mark the border with Congo, in a park declared a natural World Heritage Site.
