Discover what to see in São Tomé and Príncipe: 10 must-see destinations, from Jale Beach to Pico Cão Grande. Predominantly natural and beach; each entry includes the best time to visit and the link to its official source.
Natural(4)
Pico Cão Grande, a 370-meter basalt needle that rises like a giant finger in the middle of São Tomé's rainforest. Follow its trails through dense vegetation, climb up to the viewpoint and take in the valley opening at your feet. If you're an experienced climber, take on its vertical wall, one of the most demanding challenges in Africa. Watch the wildlife and flora that surround this volcanic formation as mist envelops its summit.
Hike to the summit of São Tomé's highest peak, 2,024 meters high, on a 10-kilometer trail that crosses cloud forest and waterfalls. Camp at the top for sunrise above the Atlantic, with views that take in the entire island if the clouds allow. Along the way you'll see volcanic geological formations, orchids, giant ferns and the island's endemic birds. Hire a local guide, as the route is steep and the fog can close in without warning. Bring warm clothing: temperatures up top drop considerably compared with the coast.
Follow the jungle trails to São Nicolau Waterfall, where water drops 100 meters over basalt rocks surrounded by tropical vegetation. Swim in the natural pools at the base of the falls and climb to the viewpoint to take in the whole valley. The area's geological formations, wildlife and flora let you spot endemic birds and plants along the way. Wear proper hiking footwear, as the terrain can be slippery after rain.
Explore Ilhéu das Rolas, the point where the equator line crosses the Atlantic off the island of São Tomé. Head to the monument marking this geographical center of the Earth and walk trails among volcanic rock formations, palm groves and mangroves. Watch birds, sea turtles and tropical vegetation as you make your way along dark-sand beaches. You'll arrive by boat from the southern tip of São Tomé, with views of the coastline throughout the trip.
Beach(2)
Visit Jale Beach in southern São Tomé and walk along its fine white sand, fringed with coconut palms that offer shade at midday. Swim in its clear Atlantic waters, snorkel near the rocks or stroll the shore to the rhythm of the waves. Head to the fishing village to see the wooden pirogues returning with the day's catch, and stay until the end: the sun sinks in front of the coast and tints the ocean in shades of orange. Here time is set by the tides and the nets drying on the beach.
Camp beside the golden sands of Jalé Beach, in southern São Tomé, one of the country's most important sea turtle nesting sites. During the nesting season, from October to April, you can join nighttime outings with local guides to watch females laying their eggs in the sand. The basic campsite near the shore lets you sleep to the sound of the waves, and fishermen from the nearby village cook fresh fish over the fire. Access is via a dirt road from Porto Alegre, so allow plenty of time and bring supplies.
UNESCO Heritage(1)
Admire the 380 km² reserve covering Príncipe, a volcanic island where rainforest reaches down to white-sand beaches and coral reefs. Walk the canopy trails among century-old trees, dive among colorful fish and watch endemic birds found nowhere else. The reserve's biodiversity has survived 500 years, and UNESCO declared it a World Heritage Site for its exceptional value. Also discover the old roças, colonial plantations that tell the story of cocoa and coffee in the archipelago.
Intangible Heritage(1)
Explore the cocoa plantation where Albert Einstein stayed in 1905 while developing the theory of relativity. Visit the colonial houses and warehouses, and see how this plantation has stood at the center of scientific history. Experience the tradition, where culture, art and customs create a living legacy passed down from generation to generation. Take part, learn and feel the connection with history.
City(1)
Take in everyday life in the capital of São Tomé and Príncipe, one of the least visited capitals in Africa. Step inside the Fortaleza de São Sebastião by the sea and the Cathedral, before losing yourself among the stalls of the central market. Head to the National Museum to learn about the country's colonial history, and end the day walking along the waterfront, where fishermen and vendors set the rhythm of the city.
Museum(1)
Explore the 3,000 pieces that tell the story of São Tomé from the Portuguese discovery to independence. Admire the wooden sculptures, colonial artifacts, and contemporary art collection. Tour the museum where artifacts, exhibits, and history create a journey through time. Discover unique collections, learn about local culture, and broaden your knowledge.
