What to see in Rwanda: 7 must-sees
Discover what to see in Rwanda: 7 must-see destinations, from Volcanoes National Park to Kigali. Predominantly national park and beach; each entry includes the best time to visit and the link to its official source.
National Park(3)
Discover Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda's Northern Province, home to mountain gorillas among bamboo and montane forest. Hike the slopes of the Virunga volcanoes with guides and trackers, watch for endemic birds and learn about the conservation work protecting these primates. Gorilla trekking is the main activity: small groups, limited permits and one hour with a habituated family. Round out your visit with climbs to craters, volcanic lakes and trails through dense vegetation and morning mist on the border with Uganda and the Congo.
Descend into Nyungwe, in Rwanda's Southern Province, and explore its 1,019 km² of mountain forest. Follow the canopy walkways suspended among centuries-old trees as chimpanzees move through the branches and black-and-white colobus monkeys leap overhead in troops. Set out at dawn with a guide to spot endemic birds found only on these slopes, cross hanging bridges above the foliage and walk among giant ferns where mist settles every morning.
Marvel at Akagera National Park, in Rwanda's Eastern Province, where 1,122 km² of savanna, lakes and hills shelter elephants, lions and a rich variety of birds. Game-drive along its tracks at dawn, cruise Lake Ihema among hippos or follow the trails to see wildlife up close. Conservation programs have brought back species such as the lion and the black rhinoceros, making the park a benchmark for wildlife protection in East Africa.
Beach(2)
Pass through the town of Gisenyi, now known as Rubavu, down to the shores of Lake Kivu, where fine sand invites you to walk barefoot by the water. Swim in its calm waters, snorkel in its clear surface or stroll the waterfront promenade at sunset as you watch local fishermen at work. This border town in the Western Province connects directly with the Democratic Republic of the Congo, making it a lively crossing point and an ideal getaway that combines swimming, lake outings and rest facing the hills that ring the lake.
Stroll along the shores of Lake Kivu in Kibuye, now Karongi, a town in Western Province spread across green hills and small bays. Hop on a boat to explore the coves, swim in its calm waters, or rest on the sand while watching the hillsides tumble down to the water. Unlike other spots on the lake, the pace here is slower: few visitors, nearby fishing villages, and sunsets facing the islands. Get there by road from Kigali and allow at least two days to explore its viewpoints and docks.
City(1)
Stop in Kigali, hailed as Africa's cleanest capital, and wander its orderly hills, where museums, markets and a growing cultural scene share the space. Visit the Genocide Memorial to understand the country's recent history, haggle at Kimironko Market among colorful fabrics and fresh fruit, and try the local coffee in downtown cafés. Head up Mount Kigali at sunset to watch the city light up among traditional neighborhoods and contemporary buildings, a reflection of a country looking to the future.
Natural(1)
Admire the scenery as you sail the calm waters of Lake Kivu, in Rwanda's Western Province, where small islands emerge among green hills and pale-sand beaches perfect for a rest. Walk the shoreline on foot, watch waterbirds and discover the geological formations of this volcanic region. You can rent a kayak, visit nearby fishing communities or simply watch the sunset reflected on the water as fishermen return to port in their traditional boats.
