National Park(4)

Rusizi National Park

Explore Rusizi National Park on the outskirts of Bujumbura, where the Rusizi River opens into wetlands before flowing into Lake Tanganyika. Across its 900 km² you'll see hippos emerging from the reeds, crocodiles on the banks, and flocks of waterbirds. Follow the trails on foot or cruise the river to watch wildlife up close and understand why these wetlands need constant protection.

Kibira National Park

Enter Kibira National Park in Bubanza province and hike trails winding through the rainforest that covers the Congo-Nile ridge. Listen for colobus monkeys and chimpanzees in the canopy as you look for turacos and other forest birds. Waterfalls tumble among giant ferns and centuries-old trees, and local guides point out animal tracks and medicinal plants. Hiking here calls for boots and patience, but every clearing offers mist, silence, and the sense of treading one of Burundi's best-preserved mountain forests.

Ruvubu National Park

Follow the trails of Ruvubu National Park in Cankuzo province, a 5,000 km² expanse where elephants and lions roam valleys and savannas crossed by the river that gives the park its name. Guided tours offer the best viewing at dawn, when animals come down to the banks. You can combine hiking with birdwatching and big-mammal spotting in one of Burundi's largest nature reserves, whose conservation keeps an essential part of the country's east untouched.

Rusizi Nature Reserve

Discover Rusizi Nature Reserve in Bujumbura Rural, where the park's 900 km² are home to hippos, crocodiles, and a wide variety of birds. Walk its trails on foot, watch flocks along the river, and get close to the hippos surfacing in the calm waters. The reserve protects endangered species and fragile habitats, so every visit supports their conservation. Between wetlands, riverside vegetation, and free-roaming wildlife, you'll enjoy a day of hiking and wildlife watching that shows Burundi's wildest side, just a short distance from the capital.

Bujumbura

See how Bujumbura stretches along the northern shore of Lake Tanganyika, Burundi's capital in the province of Bujumbura Mairie. Walk through the central market among stalls of fabrics, dried fish, and fruit, then head to the Asian quarter with its small shops. Visit the monument to Prince Louis Rwagasore and the Regina Mundi Cathedral, landmarks of the country's recent history. At sunset, make your way to Saga Beach, where fishermen prepare their boats and the waterside cafés fill with conversation.

Gitega (cultural capital)

Walk through Gitega, Burundi's political capital since 2019 and former seat of the mwami kings, where the National Museum houses instruments, ceramics, and objects from the Burundian court. Head up to the Gishora sanctuary, some 7 kilometers away, to hear the karyenda royal drums, a UNESCO intangible heritage, then return to town to haggle for fabrics and baskets at the central market. Amid hills planted with tea and coffee, the city mixes colonial buildings with brick neighborhoods and a calm pace that invites you to linger.

Lake Tanganyika

Sail on Lake Tanganyika, the deepest in Africa, off the coast of Cibitoke in northwestern Burundi. Walk along its sandy beaches, watch condors and kingfishers along the shore, and explore nearby trails among hills and rock formations. The clear water invites a swim, and at dusk the Congo mountains stand out against the lake's horizon.

Karera

Take in the Karera waterfalls in Rutana province, where water plunges between rocky walls covered in dense vegetation. Walk the trails that wind along the falls, listen to the constant rush of the water, and watch birds and butterflies among the trees of the forest. The rocks, worn away by centuries of falling water, form pools and ledges that shift with every level of the flow. Bring footwear that can handle mud and damp, and make the most of the early morning hours, when light pierces the mist and the forest is at its most active.
