Yukon and Alaska: The Last Wild Frontier
Fourteen days in the Canadian Yukon and Alaska: the Top of the World Highway, grizzly bears in Denali, glaciers, gold rush towns, and the northern lights.
Description
The Yukon and Alaska represent North America's last frontier: a land of endless forests, snow-capped mountains, wild rivers, and wildlife that still roams free. This 14-day itinerary begins in Whitehorse, the capital of the Yukon, and follows the Klondike route to Dawson City, a town that seems frozen in the 1898 gold rush. You cross into Alaska via the Top of the World Highway, with 360-degree views over glacial valleys. In Alaska you visit Fairbanks and the Trans-Alaska Pipeline, and take the scenic train to Denali National Park to spot grizzly bears, moose, caribou, and wolves in their natural habitat. The trip culminates in Anchorage, with an excursion to Matanuska Glacier to walk on 10,000-year-old ice. Accommodations alternate between wooden cabins, roadside motels, and a lodge inside Denali. The travel window is short: June to August, when the roads are free of snow. The summer midnight sun makes it possible to explore until 11pm in daylight.
Health & safety
- Bears: carry bear spray and learn how to use it
- Hypothermia risk on the glacier even in August
- International medical insurance with evacuation coverage is mandatory
