Expedition to Tassili n'Ajjer: Rock Art and Dunes

Nine days on expedition into the heart of the Algerian Sahara: the Tassili n'Ajjer, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with 15,000 prehistoric rock paintings and lunar landscapes.

9 days1 countryFrom October to April

Description

This is the most remote expedition in North Africa. It begins in Algiers with a brief Kasbah immersion before taking a flight to Djanet, the gateway to the Tassili n'Ajjer. This national park, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Biosphere Reserve, is an otherworldly landscape of rock formations sculpted by the wind over millennia, natural sandstone arches and forests of rock that defy gravity. But its true treasure is on the walls: more than 15,000 rock paintings and engravings that tell 10,000 years of human history, when the Sahara was a green savanna with giraffes, elephants and herders. Guided by Tuaregs, the traveler camps five nights in the desert: Tin Merzouga and its red dunes, the engravings of the 'weeping cows' at Tradrart, the arches of Moul N'Aga, the impossible formations of Timrass. Each night, the Tuareg fire lights up their faces while the green tea circulates in the ritual ceremony of three cups. Showering is a luxury that does not exist: water is rationed. Sleeping under a sky with no light pollution where the Milky Way casts shadows. Nine days that are a journey to the origin of humanity in one of the most inaccessible places on the planet.

Health & safety

  • Excellent physical condition required for the hikes
  • Carry a complete first-aid kit: the nearest medical help is hundreds of kilometers away
  • Constant hydration: the dry air dehydrates you without you noticing
