Sri Lanka by Night: Colombo, Party Beaches and Weligama

Four days of partying in Sri Lanka: rooftop bars in Colombo, beach clubs in Mirissa, surf by day and parties on the sand by night, capped in Weligama.

4 days1 countryDecember-April, dry season on the south coast

Description

Sri Lanka's south coast has become one of Asia's best-kept party secrets. This 4-day itinerary tours the island's best nightlife spots. It begins in Colombo with rooftop bars at the Galle Face Hotel and clubs in the Colombo 7 district. It then moves to Mirissa, the southern mecca: a beach club on the sand where parties start after sunset, with local DJs spinning reggae and EDM, arrack cocktails (Ceylonese coconut liquor) and seafood barbecues. By day, surfing the gentle waves of Weligama, perfect for beginners. The last night closes in Unawatuna, with its bohemian backpacker vibe, reggae bars and bonfires on the beach. The Ceylonese party is laid-back, beachy and very social: everyone ends up talking to everyone around a bonfire and an arrack sour. Don't expect megaclubs Bangkok-style, but rather an intimate, authentic atmosphere with your toes in the sand.

Health & safety

  • The currents on some Mirissa beaches are treacherous
  • Bootleg alcohol exists: drink only registered-brand arrack
