Namibia: Sossusvlei Dunes, Skeleton Coast and Etosha

An epic road trip through Namibia's most awe-inspiring landscapes: the red dunes of the world's oldest desert, the Skeleton Coast, desert-adapted elephants and waterhole safaris in Etosha National Park.

10 days1 countryFrom May to October, during the dry season of the southern winter. Animals crowd the Etosha waterholes and road-trip temperatures are pleasant.

Description

Namibia is a land of Martian landscapes and utter solitude. This 10-day itinerary is the ultimate route for explorers seeking the essence of Southern Africa through an unforgettable road trip, crossing endless gravel plains, fossilized deserts and savannas dotted with waterholes where wildlife gathers like nowhere else on the continent. The journey begins in Windhoek, the tranquil capital where the traces of German colonization are still visible in its architecture and beer culture. From here you head south, into the Namib Desert, the oldest in the world at over 55 million years. The Sossusvlei dunes, an intense red that shifts with every hour of light, are the heart of this desert. Sunrise at Deadvlei — a white clay pan with petrified trees over 900 years old — is one of the most iconic images on the entire continent. The route continues to the Atlantic coast, where Swakopmund offers an almost absurd contrast: German colonial architecture facing the sea, with bratwurst and strudel as the gastronomic stars. The Skeleton Coast, named for the hundreds of shipwrecks and whale bones scattered along its shores, is a landscape of dunes kissing the ocean. The trip pushes into Damaraland, where elephants adapted to desert life — with longer legs and smaller herds — wander among ages-old rock formations. Etosha National Park, centered on a gigantic salt pan visible from space, offers safaris in a unique way: sitting by a floodlit waterhole, watching elephants, rhinos, giraffes and lions file past. The journey ends at the Waterberg Plateau, a rocky massif rising from the plain like an island in the sky.

  • Malaria prophylaxis recommended for the Etosha area (November to April)
