Family Australia: Koalas, Beaches and the Great Barrier Reef
Eleven family days traveling Australia's east coast — from Sydney's beaches and Taronga Zoo to the Great Barrier Reef and Cairns' rainforests — with activities adapted to children of all ages.
Description
This family itinerary covers Australia's east coast over eleven days, designed so that grown-ups and children enjoy it equally. It begins in Sydney with Taronga Zoo, where the children can see koalas, kangaroos and platypuses up close with the Opera House in the background. The beaches of Manly and Bondi's natural pool offer safe swimming for the little ones. The SEA LIFE aquarium at Darling Harbour includes underwater tunnels and stingray touch pools. The Blue Mountains delight with the world's steepest railway at Scenic World and the Three Sisters. On the Gold Coast, the Dreamworld and Sea World theme parks combine roller coasters with dolphins. Brisbane surprises with the South Bank lagoon, a free artificial pool beside the river, and Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary, the world's oldest koala sanctuary where the children can hold a koala. Cairns is the crowning touch: the Great Barrier Reef with floating platforms so the children can snorkel with life vests, the Kuranda scenic train among waterfalls and the Skyrail over the tropical canopy.
Health & safety
- The Australian sun is extremely dangerous: apply sunscreen every two hours and avoid the sun between 11 am and 3 pm
- Saltwater crocodiles inhabit rivers and beaches of the north; only swim in zones with safe swimming signs
- The box jellyfish (November-May) at Cairns require wetsuits or stinger suits provided by the operators
- Tap water is drinkable throughout Australia
- Hospitals and pharmacies are top-level; carry your Medicare card if you are from a country with a reciprocal agreement
