Extreme Rafting on the Zanskar River: Wild Ladakh
Ten days of extreme rafting through the Grand Canyon of the Himalaya: the Zanskar River in Ladakh, with grade IV-V rapids, isolated camps and lunar landscapes at 11,480 ft of altitude.
Description
The Zanskar River, in India's remote Ladakh region, offers one of the most extreme and isolated rafting experiences on the planet. Over 10 days, you descend the Grand Canyon of the Himalaya, a 62-mile gorge accessible only by raft. The rapids reach grade IV-V with names like 'The Wall' and 'Zigzag', with water at 39°F straight from the snowmelt. The itinerary includes a flight to Leh, acclimatization at 11,480 ft, jeep transfer to the put-in at Remala, and 7 days of navigation and wilderness camps on river beaches. The route culminates at the confluence of the Zanskar with the Indus, near Nimmu. There are no roads, no villages, no mobile coverage. Only the roar of the river, 3,280-ft cliffs and starry skies like nowhere else. Previous rafting experience and absolute tolerance for the cold are required. The guides are local sherpas with decades of experience.
