Extreme Copper Canyon: From Chihuahua to Sinaloa by Mountain Bike

Seven days of extreme mountain biking and hiking in Mexico's Copper Canyon: 2,000m descents, hanging bridges, hot springs, and Rarámuri culture.

7 days1 countryOctober–March: dry season, bearable temperatures at the canyon floor

Description

Copper Canyon, in the Mexican state of Chihuahua, is a system of six canyons that together surpass the Grand Canyon in size and depth. This extreme itinerary traverses them by mountain bike and on foot, with descents of 2,000 vertical meters, stretches of climbing on volcanic rock, and trails that the indigenous Rarámuri (Tarahumara) have walked for centuries. You arrive on the Chepe train (Chihuahua al Pacífico), one of the most spectacular train journeys in the world. From Creel, you descend by mountain bike to Batopilas, at the bottom of the canyon, with unlit tunnels, sheer cliffs, and rainforest waiting below. The route includes overnight stays at natural hot springs and visits to Rarámuri communities where time seems to stand still. Requires downhill mountain bike experience, tolerance for altitudes of 2,500m, and temperatures ranging from freezing at the top to 35°C at the canyon floor.

Health & safety

  • Creel’s 2,300 m altitude can cause altitude sickness
  • Overly hot spring water can cause dizziness
  • Rattlesnakes at the bottom of the canyon
