Alpine Traversata: From Chamonix to Vienna on High Trails
A fifteen-day journey across the Alps along the Haute Route, the GR5 trail and the Austrian Alpine path, from French glaciers to Viennese vineyards.
Description
This itinerary starts in Chamonix, the world capital of mountaineering at the foot of Mont Blanc, where the traveler prepares for the most legendary traversata of the Alps. The route follows the Haute Route, a high-mountain trail running from France to Switzerland, combining glaciers, passes above 3,000 meters and mountain huts. In Zermatt, the perfectly pyramidal Matterhorn dominates the horizon. The traversata continues through the Bernese Oberland with its glaciers and turquoise lakes. It crosses the Forcla pass and descends towards Liechtenstein, the principality tucked between vineyards and mountains. Innsbruck, the capital of Tyrol, offers a cultural pause before descending to Salzburg and finally Vienna, where the Alps give way to the vineyards of the Wachau on the banks of the Danube. Fifteen days of physical effort and raw beauty that reward every single step.
Health & safety
- Risk of altitude sickness above 2,500m: climb slowly and hydrate
- Hypothermia possible even in summer on mountain passes
- Carry a complete first-aid kit: huts have limited supplies
