Monument(2)

Île aux Marins

Take a ten-minute boat ride from Saint-Pierre and land on Île aux Marins, a fishing village uninhabited since 1965 that now works as an open-air museum. Walk the wooden boardwalks among the old fishermen's houses, step inside the Notre-Dame-des-Marins church, built in 1874, and visit the Jézéquel house to understand how the families who fished for cod in these waters once lived. With no cars and no permanent residents, silence and the sea wind set the pace of the walk among docks and weathered facades.

Pointe aux Canons Lighthouse

Walk Saint-Pierre's urban coastal trail to the tip and stop before the reddish Pointe aux Canons lighthouse, the most photographed sight in the archipelago. From here you'll understand its role in protecting the harbor from the North Atlantic winds, alongside the cannons of the old defensive fort that still keep watch over the harbor entrance. Take a few minutes to watch the fishing boats coming and going and the ferries to Miquelon, and make the most of the sunset light, when the tower stands out against the gray water. Access is free, and the walk from the town center takes barely ten minutes on foot.

Natural(2)

Grand Barachois of Miquelon

Cross the dune ridge of the Grand Barachois and you'll find an enclosed coastal lagoon where seals gather alongside resting seabirds. From the shore, take in the 12-km sand isthmus that joins Miquelon with Langlade, a passage of low dunes exposed to the Atlantic. Walk the sandy strip, locate the seal groups with binoculars, and explore the wildest stretch of the archipelago, where low scrub and wind set the pace of the visit.

Cap Percé and the Langlade Coast

Explore Langlade, the largest, uninhabited island of the archipelago, where open meadows provide grazing for semi-wild horses that roam free. Make your way to the Cap Percé viewpoint and take in the cliffs dropping sheer into the North Atlantic, dark rock and constant wind. The official nature trail links these points and lets you walk among peat bogs, rugged coastline, and absolute silence. Wear sturdy footwear and warm clothing: the weather changes in minutes and the trails have no infrastructure.

City(1)

Historic Center of Saint-Pierre

Walk the streets of Saint-Pierre's historic center, where brightly painted wooden houses line a harbor that still sets the rhythm of the town. Here, just 25 km from Newfoundland, you'll find the last inhabited French territory in North America: bistros serving Bordeaux wine, clocks set to European time, and French police patrolling at an unhurried pace. Watch the fishing boats coming and going from the dock, the hub of daily life, while locals chat in French outside the shops. It's a corner where France is lived without nostalgia, simply because it never left.

Museum(1)

Musée de l'Arche

Explore the Musée de l'Arche in Saint-Pierre and discover the territorial archive that holds the archipelago's memory: the cod fishery that sustained the islands for centuries, the era of US Prohibition, when Saint Pierre and Miquelon served as an alcohol warehouse in the 1920s, and the 1889 guillotine, the only one ever used in North America. Browse documents, photographs, and objects that explain how a small French territory ended up linked to liquor smuggling and to the continent's judicial history.
