What to see in Northern Mariana Islands: 6 must-sees
Discover what to see in Northern Mariana Islands: 6 must-see destinations, from Saipan Lagoon Beaches to Managaha Island. Predominantly natural and beach; each entry includes the best time to visit and the link to its official source.
Natural(2)
Discover this uninhabited islet inside the barrier reef off Garapan, just 10 minutes by boat from Saipan. Snorkel over coral in clear water, walk along white-sand beaches, and follow trails where vegetation covers bunkers and remnants of the 1944 Battle of Saipan. It's the island's star excursion: snorkeling, history, and nature combined in a single day, with limited access that keeps the place calm and well cared for.
Admire The Grotto, a semi-submerged sea cavern on the northeast coast of Saipan connected to the ocean by three channels. Descend a staircase of more than 110 steps carved into the coral rock to reach the cave entrance. Underwater, sunlight filters through the channels and tints the interior an intense blue. It is one of the most famous cave diving spots in the Pacific, frequented by divers with cavern experience. Check sea conditions before entering, as currents can make the exit difficult.
Beach(1)
Take in the band of turquoise water sheltered by the western barrier reef, where gentle waves reach the shore. Cross by boat to the islet of Managaha and walk on its white sand surrounded by fish visible from the surface. If you stay in the hotels of Garapan, the Commonwealth's tourist hub, you'll have shops, restaurants, and bars just steps from the shore. Try introductory diving on the reef, with instructors heading out straight from the beach, and end the day watching the sunset over the lagoon from the coastal promenade.
National Park(1)
Stroll through American Memorial Park in Garapan, Saipan, a US National Park Service site honoring the fallen of the 1944 Mariana Islands campaign. At the visitor center you'll find exhibits on the battles that shaped the island, and in the restored mangrove you can walk trails through recovered coastal vegetation. At the end of the route you'll come to Micro Beach, a beach of pale sand and calm waters ideal for ending your visit by the sea, reflecting on the recent history of the Pacific in the very place where it unfolded.
Monument(1)
Explore the cliffs at the northern tip of Saipan, where the 1944 battle came to an end: thousands of Japanese soldiers and civilians leapt from Banzai Cliff and Suicide Cliff rather than surrender. Today you'll find Japanese memorials, stupas, and plaques beside lookout points over the open Pacific. Both sites form the core of the Marianas' official World War II historical itinerary, and the road linking them makes it possible to visit both in a single morning.
Archaeological Site(1)
In Tinian, explore the House of Taga, where the largest latte stone pillars in the Pacific stand as a testament to precolonial Chamorro architecture, then walk the runways of North Field, the base from which the Enola Gay took off in August 1945. In a single tour of San Jose, you combine ancient archaeology with the memory of the end of World War II, with visible vestiges in the midst of the island's unspoiled nature.
