Natural Heritage(2)

Volunteer Point

A private reserve and Important Bird Area with the archipelago's largest king penguin colony, along with gentoo and Magellanic penguins, on a white sand beach. Full-day 4x4 excursion from Stanley.

November to February
Carcass Island and Sea Lion Island

Fly with the light aircraft of FIGAS, the inter-island air service, to two easily accessible lodge islands. On Carcass Island, free of introduced predators, you'll walk among colonies of gentoo and Magellanic penguins that nest with barely any wariness. On Sea Lion Island, in the southeast of the archipelago, you'll watch sea lions and elephant seals resting on the shore alongside five different penguin species. Both pair simple lodging with wildlife sightings just steps from the lodge—no demanding trails, no crowds.

Gypsy Cove

Follow the waymarked coastal trail that links Stanley with this white-sand cove, just 8 km from the Falklands capital. The path crosses peat bogs where shorebirds forage among the low vegetation and the constant wind. When you reach the cove, you'll find colonies of Magellanic penguins nesting on the sandy slopes and heading down to the water without paying much attention to visitors. The proximity to Stanley lets you combine the hike with a visit to the port the same day, and the trail's signage means there's no need to hire a guide to get there on your own.

The Neck, Saunders Island

Enter The Neck, a narrow spit separating two white-sand beaches on the west of Saunders Island, and walk among colonies of black-browed albatrosses resting beside their nests, just a few meters from the path. Four penguin species share the same strip of land, including the raucous rockhopper penguin with its yellow crest, clambering over the rocks by the sea. This isthmus is one of the archipelago's most celebrated wildlife-watching sites, and the birds approach visitors without fear in their territory.

City(1)

Stanley: cathedral, whalebone arch, and museum

Immerse yourself in Stanley, the port capital of the Falklands, and wander its streets lined with colorful houses facing the sea. Visit Christ Church Cathedral, built in 1892 and recognized as the southernmost cathedral in the world, its interior preserving the feel of a turn-of-the-century Anglican church. Right across from it, stop beneath the arch made of whale jawbones, one of the city's most photographed landmarks. Round off the walk at the Historical Museum, where objects, photographs, and testimonies document everyday island life and the events of the 1982 war, and you'll understand how the inhabitants of this remote corner of the South Atlantic live today.

1982 memorials and battlefields

Trace the scenes of the 1982 war on a route that ties memory to wind-swept open landscape. Visit the Argentine cemetery at Darwin, where the fallen soldiers lie at rest, and the Goose Green museum, with artifacts and testimonies from the conflict. Pause at the memorials on Mount Harriet and Mount Tumbledown, key sites of the final battles, and read the plaques scattered around Stanley. Guided tours and the museum's interpretation help you understand each milestone, with accounts from both sides and of the impact on the islanders who lived through the occupation and the liberation.
