Beach(4)

Dickenson Bay Beach

Walk along the kilometer of white sand at Dickenson Bay, Antigua's best-known beach, just minutes from St. John's. Palms shade the oceanfront restaurants, where freshly prepared seafood dinners arrive at your table. Put on your snorkel gear and explore the clear water near the shore, or stroll the beach as you watch the boats come into the harbor. At sunset, the bay turns golden and locals gather at the beach bars to end the day with music and grilled fish.

Half Moon Bay Beach

Stroll along the pink sand of Half Moon Bay, on Antigua's Atlantic coast, where the surf brings turtles and, with luck, dolphins close to shore. Put on your mask and snorkel over the coral reefs that fringe the bay, or walk to the more sheltered end, where the calm waters are safe for swimming. Since the beach is largely undeveloped, you'll find solitary stretches even in high season, perfect for resting in the shade of the palms. Bring water and some food: services in the area are scarce.

Barbuda Island

Camp on Barbuda's pink-sand beach, Antigua's sister island, where solitude is still absolute. Watch the frigatebird colonies nesting in the lagoon and walk the pristine shoreline, barely marked by footprints. Snorkel in crystal-clear water, swim along little-visited reefs, and watch the fine sand change color at sunset. Getting there requires sailing from Antigua, but the reward is an almost untouched coast with calm seas and seabirds as your only company.

Jolly Beach

Stop at Jolly Beach, where 1.5 kilometers of white sand lined with palms face the Caribbean Sea on Antigua's west coast. Rent a kayak in the morning, snorkel in the crystal-clear water near the shore, and walk barefoot at sunset to the restaurants along the coast. Order a seafood dinner of the day's fresh catch as the sun goes down, and set aside some unplanned time to simply swim and rest in the shade of a palm.

Natural(2)

Shirley Heights

Climb the 150-meter lookout above English Harbour and pick out from above the docks of the old naval shipyard where Nelson once moored. On Sunday evenings a live steel band plays as ribs sizzle on the grill and the sun sinks behind Montserrat: it's the most photographed scene in Antigua. Walk the trails through dry scrub and cactus, spot lizards and frigatebirds, and explore the remains of the 18th-century military barracks that keep watch over the whole bay.

Codrington Lagoon National Park

Enter Codrington Lagoon, the largest Ramsar wetland in the Lesser Antilles, and glide through mangroves where thousands of frigatebirds gather, the largest colony of these birds in the Caribbean. Local Barbudan guides take small boats to the nesting islets, where the males inflate their red pouches during courtship season. From Codrington, the island's capital, the boat trip takes only a few minutes. Bring binoculars and let the white, gangly frigatebird chicks take center stage in your camera.
